First Mutant's bio of Brennan Mulwray
Brennan is the son of a Vietnam War fighter pilot who was imprisoned and killed after his plane was shot down behind enemy lines. Brennan and his step-father never got along. He had begun using his abilities to boost cars by the time he was 10 years old. He and his childhood buddy Cole Thatcher pulled crazy stunts like racing stolen cars on icy lakes; Brennan almost died once when his car went through the ice. In high school, faced with the court-appointed choice between juvenile detention and counseling, he chose to see psychologist Dr. Victor Palance, the first person he trusted enough to tell about his new mutant abilities. After high school, Brennan lived in a small apartment with his high school sweetheart, Becky Dolan, until she conned him out of money and left him. Brennan continued his life of petty crime and grand theft auto. He felt guilty after recommending his friend Denny Logan for a bank job which turned out to be a set-up, getting Denny thrown into prison. Brennan had just moved his gang up to armed bank robbery when he encountered Emma deLauro running from the GSA. While attempting to protect her, he was captured by GS agent Frank Thorne. Brennan chose to join Mutant X after they rescued him from the GSA's employ. As an electrical elemental, Brennan ("Sparky") can throw tesla coils from his fingers, allowing him to jump-start cars and cardiac arrests, open electronic locks, and electrocute enemies. Brennan needs a period of rest between voltage uses, and cannot use his abilities when he gets wet, lest he short out or electrocute himself. Brennan can be grounded by wrapping his arms in chains, or holding something that's touching the ground.
Brennan-centric episodes: Lit Fuse (107), Deadly Desire (121), No Man Left Behind (206), Crossroads of the Soul (207), The Grift (211), Hard Time (214), One Step Closer (219), Possibilities (311), Divided Loyalties (315), The Prophecy (320)
Brennan Trivia: Brennan reads Walt Whitman to help him relax, bounces tennis balls to help him think, and spends about 50 dollars a week on coffee. Brennan's a sucker for vintage cars, like Cutlasses and Camaros. He plays the electric guitar (somewhat). Brennan's biggest fear is having his powers used against him. If you're going to the movies with Brennan, don't make him miss the previews!
* Brennan's age: Brennan's official profile states that he is in his late twenties. Brennan mentions in "No Man Left Behind" that his biological father was shot down during the Vietnam War, specifically in 1971. If that's the case, then Brennan would presumably be about 29 or 30 years old by season one...provided that Season 1 takes place around 2002 (See the Mutant X Timeline).
*Note about Brennan's original character: According to early casting breakdowns, Brennan's codename was initially going to be "Fuse," and he was to have a romantic interest in Emma. The character's codenames were deleted after the Fox Studios vs. Marvel lawsuit, thus eliminating some of the similarities to the X-Men film.
Quotes from Brennan:
~ Hey, Speedy! Was I talking to myself, or did you NOT hear me say no using our abilities? Are you fast AND deaf?
~ It doesn't take a genius to know that a married man does not keep a picture of his girlfriend in his wallet.
~ Good poetry, a good cigar go hand and hand.
~ Brennan: You know, the two of you make it sound as if the only thing I think about is sex. Truth is, I only think about sex half the time. Jesse: The other half he's thinking about poetry. Emma: Which just makes him think more about sex. Brennan: Yeah, but you're not supposed to know that.
~ You keep chowing down like that, you're gonna be all mass all the time.
~ If I don't get my double latte before noon, I'm toast the rest of the day.
~ I spent enough time on the wrong side. I can smell a rat a mile away.
~ Come on, even geniuses need to get their groove on once in a while.
~ Didn't your mother ever tell you to wear rubbers?
~ Jesse: Hey I thought we agreed, no powers! Brennan: No, you agreed. I scored.
~ Shalimar: What took ya? Brennan: Stopped off for a beer and a bucket of wings.
~ If you want Adam to think you’re an adult or a leader, I don’t know, a space alien. Whatever it is. You’ve got to feel comfortable with it. ‘Cause once you’re comfortable with it, everyone else will accept it.
~ I heard the girls here were knockouts. Guess I should have asked them what they meant by that.
~ Jesse: You robbed banks, you stole cars, any crimes you didn’t commit? Brennan: Uh, yeah. I didn’t wear docksiders and chinos to prep school every day.
~ Having a relationship and handling women are two totally different things. One doesn’t necessarily go with the other.
~ Connor: Feds! Brennan: Well, nice to see you’re not neglecting his education.
~ Emma: The last time I saw you, you bolted out of here without saying two words. Brennan: All right, here’s two words for you: I’m sorry.
~ Adam: I’m trying to find a way to block the signals that control those things. Brennan: Well, start flipping some damned switches!
~ For the longest time, I couldn’t even imagine being a father. Now, I can’t imagine not being one.
~ Adam: What the hell is she thinking? Brennan: Well, not clearly would be at the top of my list.
~ Vic: He’s like the Wizard of freaking Oz. Brennan: Well guess what, Toto. It’s time to take your ass back to Kansas.
~ Okay, you know what? I guess I don’t have a romantic bone in my body.
~ Shalimar: Hey Bren, what if it was me thrown in some prison for some crime and you were put in a life or death position to turn on me. What would you do? Brennan: What? Like you even need to ask. I’d roll over on you like an old dog. Shalimar: You would not Brennan: Yeah, I would. You’d be so done, you’d be crispy.
~ Hope I’m not shocking your Chakra.
~ Brennan: According to Adam, he’s got a serious eye for the ladies. Shalimar: Well, I assume that’s why I was the one wearing this dress. Brennan: Trust me, you in that dress is always a good idea.
~ You know what, Jess? Why don’t you pour yourself a big glass of shut the hell up!
~ This is way too much country for me.
~ Women in prison? My specialty.
~ Samantha: What took you so long? Brennan: You know, I've already died twice today. It kinda sucks your time up a little.
~ Bad milk. Baaaad milk...
~ Shalimar: You think she's lying? Brennan: Who, Complexa? When has she ever told us the whole story?
~ Anthony Gervais: You’re too late. All you’ll have to work with is dust. Brennan: You done twirling your moustache?
~ He done blowed up.
~ Bruiser: You two got a problem? Brennan: Me? Nah. I'm just here to learn.

Season 1 DVD bio
Brennan Mulwray is a street-smart guy in his late 20's, a fast talking cavalier with an ingratiating grin -- with enough power coursing through his body to power a small city or short-circuit a power grid. Like all new mutants his electrical abilities have been with him since birth. Brennan's embraced his abilities since he was a knockabout kid of 5 -- but like so many Children of Genomex, he's kept them a secret -- ashamed and embarrassed to appear different.
As a result of overly charged positive ions in his cellular structure, Brennan can generate and conduct electricity. He can toss off lightning bolts with the ease of a smart-ass comeback, and short out a security system by merely touching a wire. A kiss from Brennan can create sparks -- literally knocking a girl off her feet... and should he get even a bit over-amped, he can black out a city's power grid. Brennan is a good-natured urban roughneck without a care in the world
-- there's nothing whatsoever guarded about this guy. Brennan's abilities are directly related to his physical, emotional and mental well-being. He has to control his temper -- because any explosion of rage can set him off out of control -- depleting himself completely of any charge. He needs at least an hour to regain his powers during which he has to rely on his considerable skills as a street-fighter to survive. In addition water can be a big problem for Brennan. If the guy gets drenched, he can't use his powers -- for fear of self-electrocution.
Brennan's condition is the result of genetic splicing to cure a defective gene inherited from his mother, a sad-faced woman who'd lived her entire life with a chemical imbalance that systematically devoured her physical energy. At 19, she found herself pregnant, and deserted by the child's father. It was her terror that she might transmit her own illness to the child growing within her that brought her to the attention of the GSA.
They discovered she was carrying fraternal twins, a boy and a girl and that it was highly likely that both twins would inherit her defective genes. Alice immediately snatched at the glimmer of hope afforded by the project. The twins were genetically engineered, leaving Alice with a new and terrible choice. Barely subsisting on welfare, she hadn't considered exactly how she was going to afford to raise one child, let alone two. Alice gave the girl, who she named Arabella, up for adoption and kept the boy, Brennan. In her heart she knew the right thing to do was to give up both children, but she so wanted to have a child of her own.
Alice died when Brennan was barely ten -- and after bouncing around from foster home to foster home, the kid found himself on the street. Brennan had always made it through life skirting the edge of ethical ambiguity -- and since the world had never done him a bit of good what was the point of clean and honest living?
So Brennan did what any wise-guy who controls electricity would do. From that point on he secretly used his abilities to short out alarm systems, posing himself of to his cronies as a master of breaking and entering but never wielding his electrical powers against another human being until his first adventure with Mutant X.
Note: From 2001-02 Tribune Entertainment created six Mutant X faux websites as part of the Mutant X official site, in order to supplement the information from the television series. These sites featured a great wealth of background information about the Mutant X characters and plot's storylines, but they disappeared in early 2005. I'm including faux website information here for completeness, but none of the following material is my own.
Adam's Interviews on Mutant X Lives
Brennan Mulwray is an unexpected addition. I had not planned on inviting a personality like his into the team. He brings to us a knowledge and background I have little experience in: crime, street survival and the underworld. I am not certain whether this will be entirely positive. His mastery of electricity flow, however, is the most advanced I’ve ever seen in an elemental. He will up our physical forces considerably. And Brennan seems to be a good influence on Jesse, bringing him out of his shell. He and I, as of yet, are still strangers. This is excerpted from our first session.
BRENNAN: So, it this where you shrink-wrap my head?
A: Not that bad, I hope. A New Mutant’s DNA tends to be in flux and that requires both physical and emotional check-ups.
BRENNAN: Well, I tend to be on an even keel so maybe you can spend more time with the others in this department.
A: When did you discover your powers, Brennan?
BRENNAN: Not buyin’ it, huh? Well, I took a shot. Okay, okay. I started making baby sparks around four or five.
BRENNAN: And it was great! Never felt like a freak. I felt special for once!
A: Could you elaborate?
BRENNAN: Well, it was just me and my mom back then. We didn’t have much money, you know, and things were tight.
(He stands up and begins pacing. In fact, he doesn’t sit down or stand still again for the entire session. He periodically flickers tiny tesla coils across his fingers, like coin tricks.)
BRENNAN: Any way, the electric thing showed me that I wasn’t just a snot-nosed poverty case. I was different.
A: You used your powers in public?
BRENNAN: No, no, no! (Laughs) That would have been a trip! Sparky the Kindergartener! No. My mom taught me to keep it a secret. But she let me practice with them all the time… if I was good.
A: You’re very proficient with them.
BRENNAN: Yeah. Bet I’ve used them in ways you never imagined.
A: You’d lose. What was your mother like?
BRENNAN: She loved me. I always knew that. She had ups and downs…you know, emotionally. But that didn’t make her…I mean…
A: She took care of you.
BRENNAN: Yeah. My dad…my real dad…was a POW who never got outta Nam. Never knew him. Had a stepdad for a while but he was a mean bastard. Mom caught on to him soon enough and got us outta there.
A: And after her death…?
BRENNAN: I was ten. It was foster homes after that. Then the streets. Home, sweet home!
A: You survived better than most.
BRENNAN: I had this, didn’t I?
(He flares up a tesla coil in his palm and lets it subside)
BRENNAN: With all this pop and fizz juicing through me there was a lot of potential to make a buck. Electronic locks, cars, computers. Piece of cake to crack. Made me very well liked in certain circles, if you know what I mean. ‘Course, I guess those days are behind me now.
A: About that. You realize Mutant X is not going to keep your wallet filled like your previous endeavors.
BRENNAN: No kiddin’?
A: In fact, Genomex would have offered you more.
BRENNAN: And stored me in a jar of alcohol if I screwed up! Listen. I’m here because it’s the right place to be!
A: Not just because of Emma?
BRENNAN: She was key…but not for the reasons you’re thinking. I’ve got lots of girls on the line, Adam. I’ve been lucky that way. But Emma…I don’t know…she’s different. Ever since I was a kid I’ve had this dream…
A: Go on.
BRENNAN: I have a sister in it and she has powers like me. You see, there’s this big empty hole in the back of my head usually but my dream sister makes it disappear. So I meet Emma and she’s wild and on the run like me and can do awesome mind taps on the side. She was…
BRENNAN: (Grins) Whoa. You’re good, man. Fished that right out of me.
A: It’s a gift.
BRENNAN: So do you trust me a little more now?
A: It’s easier.
BRENNAN: (Laughs) You know, some day you’re gonna eat a good plate of crow over this. I might be a hood—a good smelling hood, I might add—but I’m gonna do a solid job here.
A: It’s my greatest wish, Mr. Mulwray.
BRENNAN: So, enough for today, yes?
(As he walks out he picks up my copy of Shakespeare’s sonnets)
BRENNAN: Hey. Can I borrow this?
A: You read poetry?
BRENNAN: Yeah, believe it or not. My eighth grade English teacher, Ms. Meagher, turned me on to it before I dropped out. Whitman, Keats, Tennyson. Calms me down.
A: I’m surprised.
BRENNAN: With me, Adam, the word is always “shocked”.

Brennan Interview #2
I find it ironic that Brennan has become the most stalwart member of the team. A year ago, I could not have told you where his loyalties would fall. Now, I trust him more than I do myself in matters of confidence, judgment and extreme pressure. Yet, beneath his capable surface lies a barrier of self-loathing that must be addressed if he is to grow as a hero and a man. That, and his new powers are my focus.
A: You really dislike these sessions, don’t you?
BRENNAN: No, it’s just I’d rather be doing other things. Like taking on the entire GSA with my hands tied in an inch of water.
A: Is it really that bad?
BRENNAN: No worse than going to the dentist.
A: And when was the last time you did that?
BRENNAN: Hey, how ‘bout those Mets?
A: Moving right along. We almost lost you a few weeks ago.
BRENNAN: You almost lost me! I almost lost me. That she-demon had my head so twisted I didn’t know which end the sparks were going to fly from.
A: Ms. Templeton affected your mind?
BRENNAN: Among other parts. No man was safe from her, Adam. Even you. She was like Circe from Homer’s “Odyssey”.
A: You realize no one is blaming you for what happened. I just want to know how you feel about being in her thrall.
(A pause. Brennan generates electric flickers among his fingers as he finds his words.)
BRENNAN: Weak. Lame. I know it sounds nuts but even when I was…you know…with Lorna I knew deep inside that I didn’t want to be. I just couldn’t help myself. She was that strong. Adam, I let all of you down…
A: You were infected by an insect Feral, Brennan. She controlled you through your libido. You overcame it.
BRENNAN: And looked like a jerk doing it! I’ve got to make it up to the team. Damn it! I finally prove I’m not some small-time Elemental hood out for a score and a great pair of legs with a scorpion stinger sandbags me! Why does the cheap stuff always trip me up?
A: Perhaps you haven’t forgiven yourself for your former way of life yet.
A: You’ve been working extremely hard on perfecting your evolved propulsion powers. Do you know you’re the only one who works out in the Dojo with mirrors? I’d say you mastered the new blasts quite a while ago and now it’s about your form and the way you look when you land…
BRENNAN: Hey, it’s my job to get it right, Adam.
A: Don’t be defensive. I was merely inferring that you not only want to hone your electric abilities to flawlessness, but also the style in which you wield them. Always cool and smooth without breaking a sweat. Carefully crafted, like your appearance.
BRENNAN: What are you getting at?
A: Your electric powers are extremely chaotic, Brennan. They cannot always be channeled through a macho composure. The same for your actions as a person. Stress you may accumulate maintaining a front worries me. And the others.
BRENNAN: You mean Shalimar?
A: I mean the others. Being vulnerable and occasionally awkward is not the same as being weak…
BRENNAN: Look, man! Just stop there! What I do and how I do it are what I need to get by. Understand? In the life I come from the way you present yourself is everything. Maybe it’s stupid, maybe it’s predictable--
A: Maybe it’s the cheap stuff that always trips you up…
BRENNAN: AWW---(Vulgarity covered-up by electric static)
A: We don’t care about your surface, Brennan. We see beyond that. Only enemies and shallow idiots dwell on “style points”. They’ll use them to bring you down. Like Lorna Templeton.
BRENNAN: Can this be over now?
A: Over…but not finished.
GENOMEX SECURITY FILE: MX99EMB Mulwray, Brennan. Priority Clearance Only UPDATED 5/30
UPDATE: All GSA personnel may regard Mulwray as a CODE BLUE capture. It is NOT mandatory that he be brought in alive. Note: He is the ONLY associate of Mutant X that this flexibility of policy applies to. Agents are advised to use their own discretion when confronting him.
The subject profiled is a member of the outlaw faction Mutant X.
Mulwray is an Elemental in his late 20's/early 30's. He channels electricity through his body and can wield it as a weapon. In addition, the New Mutant is tall, agile, proficient in several forms of martial arts and a crack shot with most weaponry (including self-generated voltage). He is often placed in the front line of attacks and has taken down many an agent. A secondary use of his powers involves reducing current to a small enough flow to disable electronic locks, encoded computer systems, etc…
Once a GSA recruit, Mulwray hailed from a criminal background and seemed a natural candidate for the position. With no surviving family, few ties to civilian life and a inclination to womanize, he fit the GSAgent profile perfectly. In addition, he has accumulated a long, incriminating police record that dates back over a decade beginning with multiple juvenile offenses. Adam (see file #MX999AAA) either brainwashed or blackmailed Mulwray out of the fold. He has been a destructive force for Mutant X ever since.
Like all Electric Elementals, Mulwray can be short-circuited with water. It is his primary weakness. GSAgents are advised to use this advantage during confrontations. Rubber and wood have also been effective materials in battle against him.
BE WARNED: Mulwray is a confident fighter, ruthless in regards to whom and what he harms. There is a street smart, hair-trigger quality in his assaults that make him more lethal than his fellow terrorists. He has a history of deceit and robbery and is not above substance abuse. Consider him a TOP PRIORITY THREAT to all Genomex staff and activity.
This mandate remains in place UFN.
