Reagan Pasternak....Toni Quintana
Joy Tanner....Kendra MacEvoy
Official Synopsis: At Genomex, Eckhart (Tom McCamus) vows to concoct a scheme to take over and control Proxy Blue. He is concerned that if the virtual news reporter continues to leak details concerning the GSA, it will be difficult for the agency to remain a covert operation. He enlists the services of Agent Kendra MacEvoy (Joy Tanner), who believes she has the perfect way to solve the Proxy Blue problem. Later, Brennan (Victor Webster) and Jesse (Forbes March) help Toni (Reagan Pasternak), Jesse's new mutant girlfriend, a well-known computer genius, set up for the grand opening of her new internet coffee bar, Datadive. When Kendra, a longtime friend of Toni's walks in, Brennan and Jesse assume she's paying a friendly visit. Suddenly, four agents burst into the coffee bar. Brennan and Jesse manage to elude capture as Toni is taken away, leaving the two to wonder about the nature of Toni's involvement with the GSA. Back at Genomex, Toni is injected with a subdermal governor and ordered by Eckhart to get started on fixing the Proxy Blue problem. Meanwhile at Sanctuary, Adam (John Shea) and the Mutant X team discover that a virus may have invaded Sanctuary's system. Adam runs complete diagnostic tests. He discovers that when Toni sent Jesse a picture file, her application spread throughout the hard drive, but was unable to crack Mutant X's system. If the GSA finds the matching software, however, they'll be able to use satellite technology to pinpoint the exact location of Sanctuary, destroying everything they have created. Jesse, concerned about Toni's fate, begins to wonder if she had been truthful with him. Suddenly, Toni calls, warning Jesse that Kendra is heading to Datadive to retrieve the mapping software. When Brennan and Shalimar (Victoria Pratt) race to Datadive to try to get a hold of the software, they find the place empty and conclude that Kendra must have taken the equipment to Genomex. Back at Genomex, Toni unveils the "new and improved" Proxy Blue to Eckhart. Believing that the GSA now has total control over the virtual reporter, Eckhart is completely unaware that Toni has actually created a fake Proxy Blue, utilizing her to send a distress message to the Mutant X team through her news report. Upon receiving Toni's message, Adam and the team disguise themselves and head to Genomex to rescue and retrieve both Toni and the mapping software microdrive. Utilizing all of their new mutant powers, they break into Genomex and find Toni engaged in a fight with one of Eckhart's agents. Jesse uses all of his strength to pull the agent off Toni, slamming him into a nearby computer monitor, and destroying the mapping computer microdrive in the process. As Kendra scurries around the lab looking for Toni, Brennan shoots her with an electrical bolt that sends her flying. Meanwhile, Eckhart gets a message from Proxy Blue telling him that Adam put her to work cleaning out his system, and as of the next morning, Eckhart will have to start everything from scratch. Back at Sanctuary, Jesse and Toni reunite while Adam explains to the others that it is best if they hide Toni in plain sight rather than placing her in the underground.
Quotes: Brennan: Okay, you guys wanna break it up, or do you want me to come in there and pry you apart, huh?
Toni Quintana: Can’t stand to see other people happy, huh?
Jesse: Oh, have a little pity, honey, the guy’s just jealous.
Brennan: Yeah, I didn’t introduce the two of you just so that I could sit here and watch you stare longingly into each other’s eyes.
Toni: Oh, it’s so sad.
Shalimar: How'd you do that?
Adam: It's another example of using your opponents' weaknesses against them.
Emma: Oh, please.
Shalimar: We've been hearing that from day one.
Adam: No, no. I'm serious. In your case, your recklessness leaves you wide open. And you--you play so conservatively I can read you like a book.
Shalimar: You wanna know what I think?
Emma and Shalimar: He cheats.
Proxy Blue: One of my regulars called in to describe what might be the ringleader in all this. A white-haired guy who seems to pop up in a lot of these stories.
Mason: Miss MacEvoy!
Adam: Understanding your opponent's weakness is important for everything in life.
Emma: So what are yours?
Adam: None of your damn business.
Shalimar: Brennan introduced you two?
Jesse: I know where you're going with this. I know all about her past. I also know she's left it behind.
Shalimar: Just don't want you getting into something that could hurt you down the road.
Jesse: You know, coming from anyone else, I'd resent that. But coming from you? I love it.
Jesse: Brennan's reading, Shalimar's cleaning up, and Emma...Emma's playing chess by herself and still getting her ass kicked.
Emma: I heard that!
Jesse: And me? I’m just having the time of my life sitting here staring at you.
Toni: Aw. You do know how to sweet-talk a girl. And speaking of staring, I just got those shots I told you about. Interested in seeing some pictures of me in some really sexy lingerie?
Jesse: Let me think about that.
Toni: Only one of the reasons I am crazy about you: You’re never at a loss for words.
Kendra MacEvoy: It's called social engineering, Mr. Eckhart. The process by which, with a few simple cues, one manipulates a mark.
Mason: The way a con man ingratiates himself with a victim?
Kendra: Grifters have been using this technique for years. Political candidates too.
Mason: Multimillionaire plutocrat passes himself off as a good ol' boy.
Kendra: Regardless of what the product is, social engineering is just a matter of selling a client what they think they already want.
Brennan: Do I look like the kind of guy who needs to be set up?
Jesse: Do I?
Mason: I have to say, Miss MacEvoy, I find this new look of yours a nice change from...
Kendra: My former presentation?
Mason: If I were to offer an opinion, I’d suggest it’s a big improvement.
Kendra: Actually, sir, this is my real look. I was afraid you wouldn’t take me seriously if I showed up looking like this, so I transformed myself to convey the idea of no-nonsense seriousness.
Mason: When I had you undercover infiltrating Miss Quintana's world, you were socially engineering me?
Kendra: I guess you could say that.
Mason: I knew we'd work together beautifully.
Adam: There’s too many unknowns in the equation. I mean, first of all, we don’t know where she really stood.
Jesse: Where she stood? You know what, I think I’ll tell you where she stood. She did not set us up.
Adam: Well, you know that?
Jesse: I know that.
Adam: No, you don’t know that. You feel that. You said yourself that she introduced Kendra to you as her friend. Now second, if she was imprisoned against her will, how do we know that Eckhart hasn’t managed to suborn her?
Jesse: Suborn her?
Adam: Suborn, Jesse. She may be lost to us.
Toni Quintana: How come you never told me how much subdermal governors itch?
Toni: Any other girlfriends being held prisoner by the GSA?
Jesse: What in the hell were you thinking?
Toni: Oh, Jesse, it’s like I said. You know, I’m a cracker. It’s like Everest. You do it because it’s there.
Kendra: You know, I don’t have to tell you the kind of pressure I’m under to deliver here.
Toni: Am I crazy, or are you trying to get me to sympathize with you?
Kendra: Yeah, if I thought it would work...
Shalimar: I'm just afraid Jesse's not going to forgive himself for getting us into this.
Brennan: That's such a girl thing. C'mon, guys don't walk around beating themselves up about stuff like that. He'll be over it before you know it.
Shalimar: What a load of macho crap!
Brennan: It's not macho crap. That's why girls like soap operas and guys like boxing.
Shalimar: Oh, please.
Brennan: C'mon. A soap opera takes a year to tell 15 minutes of drama, and in the ring it's over in 15 seconds.
Shalimar: I hope that's not your philosophy for everything.
Adam: We've got to use the GSA's vulnerability against them. Now their biggest weakness is Eckhart's bullying assumption that might makes right, when in fact, might, in their case, means arrogance, overconfidence, and smugness.
Mason: I love the fact that it subtly blames the victim.
Kendra MacEvoy: I thought you might like that, sir.
Mason: And while the original encourages skepticism, ours raises doubts about the nature of reality itself.
Proxy Blue!Red: Who really owns your thoughts? Your feelings? Your ideas? Reality is yours to make, so make it right.
Adam: We're going into Genomex because whatever the danger that awaits us there, the greater danger is the risk of compromising our Sanctuary's location, And that's something we must never allow to happen.
Brennan: Kendra! You ran off so quickly last night, we never got a chance for a goodbye kiss. [zaps her] Unfortunately, I don't think there's gonna be a second date.
Mason: Miss MacEvoy, take your hands off me.
Trivia & Nitpicks: This episode's title, "In the Presence of Mine Enemies," comes from The Bible, Psalms 23:5 "Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil. My cup runneth over."
Notable guest star: Mark Lutz as Eric Tanner. (Sometimes known as The Groosalugg on Angel: The Series.)
Emma's non-telempathic power #5: Emma blinds the Genomex guards, allowing Mutant X to enter uninterrupted. Blindness isn't an emotion, but she'll pull this off again in "Double Vision," and "Interface."
Fashion Victim: Why is it guys with long hair think too much gel goes with a suit? *shudder*
Everyone changes clothes when the simulation shuts off. This is giving me some pretty nasty bad fic ideas.
Adam plays poker with Shal and chess with Emma. At the same time. Apparently this makes him Very Smart.
This is the first time Eckhart explicitly states that they want to keep new mutants' existence invisible to society's radar.
When Kendra's showing Mason the version of Proxy Blue Toni's created, Proxy Red says: "We've all been left in the lurch at one time or another....the best way to get ahead is by knowing your opponents weaknesses." This exact clip will be used again as the very last thing Proxy Blue gets to say before Shalimar kills her in "Past as Prologue."
Also, they must have had limited shooting time for this episode. During the second practice Genomex break-in in the dojo, they re-used all of the clips from the first run and just looped the dialogue in afterwards. It's a little eerie, because even though the team is talking to each other, you never actually see them talking until the very end of the simulation.
Then, when Mutant X enters Genomex headquarters for real after their first two practice runs, the director's stuck in two clips directly from "I Scream the Body Electric": the first when Shalimar and Adam run up the Genomex back stairs together, and the second when Jesse's walking down the balcony, dressed as a Genomex guard.
They do too eat at Sanctuary. Look, dishes! Of course, they look like they came from a Japanese restaurant, but still. The Mutant X team is always eating take-out--Japanese, Thai, pizza. Being a member of Mutant X means never having to actually cook anything.
