Mutant X Episode #212 Transcript: "At Destiny's End"
[Opening Scene. Wyckoff Chemical Plant, mid-day. Three men wearing hats and handkerchiefs over their faces run along the rooftops and rappel down the side of the building. Reaching the hatch leading into the chemical plant, one of them pulls out a pair of pliers.]
Climber #1: Crack her. [Climber #2 breaks open the lock and opens the hatch.] Let’s go! [The three climb inside.]
[Up in the Double Helix, Emma, Jesse, Shalimar, and Brennan are flying towards the plant when Adam calls them from Sanctuary via video link.]
Adam: What’s your ETA to the facility?
Brennan: I can see the lights now.
Adam: The perimeter alarm went off three minutes ago. These guys are already inside. Get a move on it.
Emma: Yeah, what are we doing, anyway? These guys aren’t criminals.
Jesse: Really? What do you call people who blow up private property?
Brennan: Let’s save the debate for later. We’ve gotta stop these guys from doing any more damage. Hang on, I’m taking her down.
[Inside the plant, the three men pull down their masks and come to a long hallway. Skye takes Tyler's arm.]
Skye: Hold up. Do your thing, man. Which way should we go? Tell us the futures. [Tyler takes off his glasses and looks down one end of the hallway. Squinting his eyes shut, he uses his mind to look down the corridor to see what the future would be if they went that way. He sees an explosion. Opening his eyes, he turns and does the same for the other direction, where he sees a locked door in his mind’s eye. He returns to Skye, smiling, and heads in the first direction.]
Tyler: We should go this way. [Skye and Deacon follow him down the hall.]
[Landing the Double Helix, Mutant X runs up to the building. Brennan sees the ropes hanging from the roof.]
Brennan: Okay, they’re definitely here. We need to find the containment facility; that’s where the chemicals are gonna be kept.
Jesse: How are you at holding your breath?
Brennan: Yeah, right? All right, we need to move in from both sides and work towards the center. [He grabs Emma’s arm and runs off in one direction with her; Jesse takes Shalimar’s arm and they run off in the opposite direction. Finding the broken lock on the hatch, Brennan and Emma climb inside.]
[Skye, Tyler and Deacon find the containment facility guarded by a large red light atop a Danger sign.]
Skye: Whoo. This is it, my friends. Another day, and they’re gonna to process another two tons of ethylene dioxide.
Tyler (removing his knapsack): Enough to give half the state cancer.
Skye: Okay, let’s plant those charges. [As he and Tyler plant explosives near the chemical equipment, they grin at each other.] And after we’re done, all they’ll be doing is picking up the pieces.
Tyler: Let’s get out of here, then. [The three run towards the exit.]
[Coming to the long hallway, Brennan waits for Emma to choose one way, then follows her to the end before stopping.]
Brennan: All right, check it out. You cover the exit. See if you can sense them. Call me if you get anything. [She nods, he heads towards the containment facility.]
[Tyler, Skye, and Deacon are racing to the door when Tyler is stopped dead in his tracks by a vision of himself kissing Emma. He drops his gear.]
Skye: Come on, man! Come on, man! [Tyler shakes himself and runs to his friends. Sensing his presence, Emma walks in slowly and picks up the climbing gear. She’s staring off into space when Brennan comes back. He takes the gear from her.]
Brennan: What’s going on?
Emma: They were just here. They went that way.
Brennan: Why didn’t you tell me? [Over his comlink.] Shal, Jess, they were just here. Whatever they set in there’s ready to blow. Get out!
Shalimar (in the containment facility with Jesse): You heard the man.
Jesse: Well, maybe we can stop it.
Brennan (pulling Emma along): There’s no time! Get out! [Jesse and Shalimar turn to leave when the charges blow. Jesse masses to protect Shalimar from the massive fireball that envelops them. Brennan and Emma run in, staring at the destroyed room.]
Opening Credits. “At Destiny’s End.”
[Back at Sanctuary's lab, Brennan reports to Adam.]
Brennan: Adam, we should have had them.
Adam: Yeah, but you can’t blame yourselves. These guys have made miraculous escapes from every operation they’ve ever pulled.
Brennan: No, this is different. Emma was standing right there. She just froze.
Brennan: If I hadn’t gotten back to her when I did, I may not have been able to warn Shalimar and Jesse.
Adam: So what do you think happened to her?
Brennan: I don’t know. Maybe, maybe she’s got sympathies for what these guys are doing.
Adam: Wait, are you saying that you don’t trust her?
Brennan: All I know is the next time I go into a situation, we’d better all be on the same team. [He storms out.]
[In the main room, Shalimar peers over Jesse’s shoulder as he searches the computer database for the insignia on the climbing gear. Emma sits on the ledge in the middle of the room, watching them.]
Jesse: Score! That rappelling rig was not of your local sporting goods store variety. And that eagle crest was custom sewn.
Shalimar: How does that help us?
Jesse: Well, climbers are a superstitious bunch. And they’ve got to trust their lives to the rig maker.
Shalimar: So if we find a guy whose logo is an eagle crest, he can help us find our eco-terrorists. [Jesse nods.] Man, I’ll bet there’s a whole lineup of people waiting to get their hands on these guys once we take them down.
Emma (standing up): And if this were a sane world, they’d be lining up to take down the guys that own Wyckoff Chemicals. You know last year, they pumped over 12 million pounds of ethylene oxide into the environment?
Shalimar: Which is?
Jesse: Oh, right on the top of everyone’s hit list of cancer-causing chemicals. I agree, Emma.
Adam (in the lab): Emma? I need to talk to you for a second. [She enters, passing Brennan on his way out.]
Emma: Look, if this is about what happened at the chemical factory...
Adam: Well, yeah, it is. And you have to understand why I’d be concerned.
Emma: You or Brennan?
Adam: Well, me. I’m concerned when we’re not working as a team, and Brennan said that he didn’t think that you were committed to the cause.
Emma: Adam, I am committed. I don’t know, I just–I froze.
Adam: Okay, why?
Emma: I don’t know.
Adam (sighing): Emma, something happened back there. Until I know whether it was caused by your politics or your powers, I’m sorry, you’re just gonna have to stay here, closer to home. [Emma stares at him, open-mouthed, as he leaves.]
[In front of their trailer on the beach, Tyler, Skye, and Deacon are sitting in lawn chairs drinking beers.]
Deacon: Tyler, you were awesome today, man! You called every move like clockwork. You’re our magic 8 ball.
Tyler (getting up) Great.
Skye (going after him): Tyler, come on, hold on, man. We’re supposed to be celebrating here. We just struck another blow for Mother Earth.
Tyler: Yeah, I know. I’m just bagged.
Skye: Well, there’s plenty of time for that when you’re an old man, dude. There’s still a lot of guys out there dumping crap in our water. Our mission is not complete.
Tyler (pointing at his head): I don’t know, man. I’ve been using my...my thing too much. It hurts more now than ever.
Skye: It’s getting better too, though, right? It’s like a muscle. No pain, no gain.
Tyler: Maybe. It’s also what we’re doing.
Skye: So you don’t believe in it anymore?
Tyler: I believe in what we started with. Hell, man, I hit the beaches some mornings and I see the crap and the dead fish and it makes me want to cry. But doing these chemical plants? I mean, it’s like we do our thing and they pocket some fat insurance coin and then they’re right back in business. What are we doing?
Skye: Oh, man, we’re taking action and we’re striking fear. They don’t call it eco-terrorism for nothing.
Tyler: Do you really think they’re afraid of us?
Skye: Then we make them afraid, nephew. We hit bigger and harder.
Skye: You’re different this time, Tyler. What happened to you back there? You saw something you’re not telling me. Come on, man.
Tyler: No, nothing like that. It’s just...I’m just tired is all. [He drinks his beer.]
Skye: Yeah. You need a refill on that? [Tyler shakes his head and starts to walk away. Skye stops him.] You need to stop worrying. [Tyler drops his beer at Deacon’s feet and leaves.]
[Back at Sanctuary, Shalimar walks up to Emma’s room to find her sitting on her bed, packing her things.]
Shalimar (leaning in the doorway): Jesse got a list of designers for that rappelling rig.
Emma (folding some clothes into a bag): Great.
Shalimar: There’s a couple stationed down at the marina. Are you coming?
Emma: Nope. Adam wants me to sit this one out.
Shalimar (coming in): Look, Emma, something happened back there you’re not telling us about.
Emma: Yeah, I screwed up. That’s all there is to it.
Shalimar (sitting on the table across from her): You know what? You may be able to fool everyone else, but not me.
Emma: In the chemical plant, when I reached out and tried to sense the thieves, I contacted one of their minds. He was in the same contact with me, and he was loving me.
Shalimar: What do you mean, he gave you a love hit? I mean, you can do that.
Emma: It was more than that. It was like he’d always known me and I’d always known him, like we were meant for each other. I know it sounds crazy, but think about it. People always talk about people who fall in love at first sight.
Shalimar (smiling): And he just happens to be a psycho terrorist.
Emma: Nothing’s ever easy, is it? I have to find him.
Shalimar (shaking her head): Emma, please don’t do this.
Emma: Adam thinks that I’m not thinking clearly, but I am. I’ll call if I find anything. [She picks up her bag and walks towards the door just as Jesse comes up to the doorway.] You heard.Jesse: Yup.
Emma: So you gonna try and stop me too?
Jesse (smiling, holding up the keys to the motorcycle): Thought you might need these. [Emma takes the keys and hugs him. She walks out.]
Shalimar (calling after Emma): Be careful. [Jesse looks at her and shrugs.]
[Emma drives the motorcycle down to the marina and walks down the stairs to the pier. She approaches a man sitting on a lawn chair behind a desk by the water.]
Emma: So, I hear this is the best place to buy climbing gear.
The Rig Maker: If you want custom, it’ll cost you.
Emma (smiling): You wouldn’t happen to know anyone who makes a harness with an eagle crest on it, do you?
The Rig Maker: That’s my design. I just sold a bunch about a month ago to some wild X boys down the beach.
Emma: Really? How wild?
The Rig Maker: If these boys can’t ride it, climb it, or jump off it, nobody can.
Emma: Well, you don’t happen to know where they hang out, do you?
The Rig Maker (frowning): Why do you want to know?
Emma (shooting a psionic blast at him): Because I want to be their friend.
The Rig Maker (blinking): Oh.
Emma: I mean, we’re all friends here, right? [She nods at him, grinning.]
[Moments later, Emma’s strolling down the beach stripped down to her wet suit. She passes Skye and Deacon as they laugh with two women. Checking her out, Skye says goodbye to his friends and trots after her.]
Skye: You’re new to the beach, girl.
Emma (taking off her sunglasses): Are you the official greeter?
Skye: Ah, that depends. Who’re you looking for?
Emma: A friend of yours. Blond guy, blue eyes.
Skye (chuckling): Tyler? Are you sure you’re extreme enough for a bad boy like Ty?
Emma: Try me.
Skye (looking over at the jet skis): Well, I could take you to him, but you’d have to hitch a ride on back. If you think you can handle a little speed.
Emma (zipping up her wetsuit): Don’t worry about me. [Nodding, Skye zips up his own wetsuit and leads her into the water as Tyler walks up to the shore behind them. Dropping his surfboard in the sand, he watches, puzzled, as Skye and Emma take off into the ocean. With Emma hanging on behind him, Skye races another jet ski rider around the water. On the shore, Tyler holds his head as he has a vision of Emma falling off the jet ski and drowning. Yelling for Skye to stop, he wades into the water and rides on his own jetski after them.]
Tyler: Skye! [Skye and the other racer play chicken, driving directly at one another. At the last moment, the other racer swerves, but Emma falls off the back of Skye’s jet ski, plummeting into the water. The two racers stop, hovering over the water. Tyler races over.] Where is she? Where is she, Skye?
Skye: Hey, she’ll come up in her own time.
Tyler: No! She won’t! [Jumping off his jet ski, he dives in after Emma and pulls her up.]
Skye (to the other racer): Let’s go. [They ride back to shore. Tyler tows Emma back to his own jet ski.]
[Shalimar and Jesse are leaning on the steps at Sanctuary when Adam comes out of Emma’s room.]
Adam: Where’s Emma?
Jesse (glancing at Shalimar): Um. See it’s like this...she felt she had to...um...
Shalimar: Take some time off.
Adam: Well, that’s funny. ‘Cause when I talked to her, she wanted to get back into the field.
Shalimar (glancing at Jesse): Well, she promised she wouldn’t interfere with the case.
Adam: Yeah, you know what I think? I think she’s out there looking for the guy who made the harness, and I think that you.... [He glares at Jesse.] ....gave her the information.
Jesse: Adam, it was a special situation.
Adam: There are no special situations!
Shalimar: She had some things she needed to work out.
Adam: Well, she can work them out here! You know, she doesn’t have to put herself right in the middle of the line of fire.
Jesse: We got a list of the retailers.
Shalimar: Which means we have a good idea of where she is, and we’re gonna keep an eye on her. We’ll watch her back.
Adam: All right, we are gonna continue with the operation as planned. But when you find her, you make sure she’s okay. You keep her out of your way.
Jesse (nodding): We’ll find Brennan and fire up the Helix.
Adam: I don’t have to remind you that these guys have been ahead of us and the authorities every step of the way.
Jesse: Adam, Emma will be fine.
Adam: But not if they’re working with a powerful empath. Then she can’t rely on her powers. You know, they might be able to sense her presence. They may be able to control her in some way. Hurry! [Shalimar and Jesse head out.]
[Emma and Tyler are sit on a blanket on the beach.]
Tyler: Are you all right?
Emma: Yeah, I think so. Your friend’s a pretty crazy driver.
Tyler: Yeah, we all push it. It’s sort of what we do. He gets kind of crazy.
Emma: Yeah, I have friends like that too. You know, this is gonna sound like some cheesy line, but have we ever met before?
Tyler: A lot of people say that. I don’t know.
Emma: I don’t know what it is, but I feel like you know me. Like you can see right through me. [They laugh.] Crazy, right?
Tyler: You’re coming on to me.
Emma: I haven’t decided yet.
Tyler: Yeah, you have. Everything’s already decided, we’re just waiting for it to happen.
Emma: Well, that sounds a little predictable.
Tyler: Not if you know what’s coming is everything you’ve been waiting for your entire life.
Skye (walking past them with Deacon): Tyler, come on, we’re rolling, dude.
Tyler: Listen, we’re having a party tonight. Come.
Emma: Okay. [Tyler leaves with his friends. Emma smiles to herself.]
[Brennan and Jesse are strolling along the marina shoreline when they pass a couple of beautiful women.]
Shalimar (walking up to them, laughing): Down boys.
Jesse: Oooo, but if I wasn’t such a professional.
Shalimar (giggling): Yeah.
Brennan: Yeah, Mr. Professional. Listen, why don’t you take the extreme edge, it’s about a half mile up the beach.
Jesse: All right. [He walks off.]
Brennan: Shal, if you want to take Climber’s Haven, it’s right over there. And I’m uh, gonna check out the one that’s over there.
Shalimar: Cool. [He starts to walk away; she stops him with a hand on his chest.] Um...Brennan, if you find Emma first, just go easy on her, okay?
Brennan: You know, let’s just concentrate on finding her and shutting these guys down, okay?
Shalimar: Yeah. [Brennan heads off; Shalimar goes down to the pier to approach The Rig Maker.] Are you the guy I talk to about climbing equipment?
The Rig Maker (combing through his box of supplies): Yeah, that’d be me. [He looks up, appreciating the view of Shalimar in her bikini).
Shalimar: Well, I’m looking for something specific.
The Rig Maker (standing up): Don’t tell me. Eagle crest?
Shalimar: How’d you guess?
The Rig Maker: When two beautiful girls come asking for gear in one day, I’ve gotta figure something’s up.
Shalimar: So, what’d you tell her?
The Rig Maker: More than I should have, probably. But she had this way of asking....
Shalimar (picking up a piece of metal from the table): Yeah, she has that. So how about you tell me what you told her. See, I have my own special way of asking. [She bends the metal and tosses it on the table. The Rig Maker stares at her, frightened.]
[Jesse’s flirting with a beautiful woman on the docks when Brennan calls him over.]
Jesse (to the woman): Yeah, um, give me a call sometime.
The Woman: Okay, great. [Jesse walks over to Brennan.]
Brennan: Any luck?
Jesse: Yeah. Five, six numbers so far.
Brennan: Don’t make me hurt you, all right? [Jesse laughs.] You didn’t find anything?
Shalimar (coming up to them): I got it. And the guy I talked to also talked to Emma. He said the boys we’re looking for live just down the beach.
Jesse: That’s great! All we need now is a way in.
Shalimar (rubbing her hands together): Well, that may be the easy part. They’re having a party. And, unless you guys have any objections, I think we should crash it.
[That night, a large group of young partygoers gather around a few bonfires on the beach, drinking and dancing. Emma walks into the group carrying a bottle and searching for Tyler.]
Tyler (running up to her): Emma!
Emma: Great party!
Tyler: I got no money, but a hell of a lifestyle. [Reaching out, he tucks her hair behind her ear.] What?
Emma: You know, you still haven’t told me who you really are.
Tyler: You know who I am. Same way I know you.
Skye (coming up, throwing his arm around Tyler): Well, well, well, my boy! Whoo! You two seem to be hitting it off pretty good. I guess you have me to thank.
Tyler: I almost have you to thank for killing her.
Skye: Yeah, comes with the territory. Listen, if you’re gonna hang with Tyler here, you’ve gotta understand something. He’ll spend time with you now, but before you know it, he’s gonna come back to me, hunting down the next big wave or the next untouched mountain. And that’s what we’re really about.
Tyler: Skye, it’s not about–
Skye: No, no, Emma should know who she’s getting mixed up with, here.
Emma: Well, why don’t you tell me?
Skye: We stand against the system that kills the human spirit. Come on, girl, look around you, huh? People are dying a little every day while the air becomes more polluted by their tin cans and the ocean gets chocked by their oil spills. We’re on borrowed time and people don’t even know about it.
Emma: Yeah, that’s a great speech. But how far would you go to back it up?
Skye (in her face): All the way. But why do I feel you know that already?
Tyler (pushing him back): That’s enough, Skye, all right?
Skye (backing away): Tyler, cool. You’ll have to excuse me, but my party’s going on, and I haven’t been holding up my end.
Emma (to Tyler):Come on. [He puts his arm around her and they walk off together.]
[Down the beach, Jesse, Shalimar, and Brennan enter the partying crowd.]
Jesse (looking around happily): Now this is what I’m talking about.
Shalimar: Try to focus.
Brennan: Guys, we need to find something to link these guys to the bombings, so let’s look around. Keep your eyes open for Emma. [He and Shalimar start towards Skye’s trailer. Jesse stays put, eyes glued to the dancers around the bonfire, until Shalimar grabs his arm and yanks him away. Brennan opens the trailer door and Shalimar and Jesse follow him inside. Walking down the beach with Tyler, Emma sees them out of the corner of her eye.]
Emma (touching Tyler’s arm): Would you excuse me for just one sec? I just have to...um...I’ll be right back. [She hands him her bottle and heads towards the trailer.]
[Jesse, Brennan, and Shalimar are looking around the messy trailer.]
Jesse: You know, being a terrorist is one thing. But at least these guys could be neat.
Shalimar: What, you want to tidy up for them? [Jesse places his hands on his hips and waggles his head at her.]
Brennan (holding up a harness): Well, looks like we found what we were looking for. Eagle crest.
Shalimar: Well, it’s gonna take more than that to prove these are our guys.
Emma (barging into the trailer): What the hell are you guys doing here?
Shalimar: Supposedly the same thing you’re doing here.
Brennan (showing her the harness): Look familiar?
Emma: What? They’re into climbing, so what?
Brennan: These are the terrorists, Emma, what are you thinking?
Jesse: Emma, I know how you’re feeling, but we’ve still gotta take these guys down.
Emma: Well, what do you want to do, start using powers? There’re like 50 people out there.
Brennan: So, you got a better idea?
Emma: Yeah, we back off until they make their next move!
Shalimar: And what’s that gonna get us?
Emma: Time to find out if these are the right guys.
Brennan: Are you sure that’s your only motivation?
Emma: I’m positive.
Skye (opening the door, seeing them all inside): Well, well, Emma. Looks like you’re full of surprises. [One by one, the Mutant X team troops out of the trailer in front of Deacon and Skye, who are holding crowbars.] Looks like you caught yourself some thieves. Only question is, where do we go from here?
[Holding up their crowbars, Skye and Deacon face off in front of Mutant X.]
Skye: Well, I’m waitin’ here. Anything to say before we start taking you to pieces?
Brennan: Back off! All right, buddy? We’re looking around. No harm done.
Skye (rushing at him, brandishing his crowbar): Harm’s still comin’ friend. [Brennan grabs his arm, removes the crowbar, and hits him in the stomach. Deacon attacks Jesse, who kicks him to the ground; Shalimar steps on his crowbar and snatches it out of his hand.]
Shalimar (to Deacon): You want a piece of this?
Tyler (running over): What’s going on here?
Skye (pointing at Emma): Why don’t you ask your girlfriend?
Emma: Nothing. These people just got lost back here. [She glares at Brennan.] They were just leaving.
Tyler: Why don’t you guys just make yourselves at home, okay?
Brennan: No thanks, brother. We’ve got better parties to crash. [He nods at Shalimar and Jesse.]
Shalimar (sauntering up to Skye, throwing him Deacon’s crowbar): Anybody ever tell you you’re a lousy party host? [Brennan throws Skye’s crowbar to Deacon, and the three leave Emma standing next to Tyler.]
Skye (warning Emma): I’m watching you, girl.
[At sunrise, Emma and Tyler lie next to each other on a towel on the sand a short distance from the trailer.]
Emma: I know it was you at the chemical factory.
Tyler: Why’d you let me go?
Emma: Come on, you know the answer to that already. I felt exactly what you felt. So when did you find out you were special?
Tyler: Special...funny, growing up, that’s not the word I would have used to describe it.
Emma: Okay, when did you discover you were different?
Tyler (sitting up): The first vision I remember having was of my little brother. I was nine, he was seven. I saw him lying on the grass. There was something about him, his skin. He was blue. I knew he was dead. I figured it couldn’t be, right? I mean, it had to be a dream. My mind playing tricks on me. The next day he drowned in a neighbor’s pool. They tried to revive him...
Emma (rubbing his back): Oh my God. Tyler, I’m so sorry.
Tyler: I spent years blaming myself. I didn’t know it was really going to happen.
Emma: So you see the future.
Tyler: Future possibilities. Various doors that, if opened, will lead to specific outcomes. I never had a name for what I did.
Emma: I spent a lot of my life trying to figure out my own gifts. So, what did you see when we met?
Tyler: Why don’t you tell me?
Emma: It’s different. You know, I don’t see things like you do. But what I felt...it’s hard to describe. You know, it was like this immediate connection, as if for the first time in my life, I found someone who really understands what it’s like...
Tyler: ...to live your life every day knowing things that normal people don’t even consider. Someone who learned to shut out people around you just to keep your own sanity intact.
Emma: Someone you feel so safe with because you know he’s more like you than anyone else. [They kiss. Suddenly, Tyler pulls away, having a vision of Skye shooting Emma.] What is it?
Tyler: It’s...it’s nothing, okay? That happens sometimes.
Emma (holding his arm): What happens? Tyler, you had a vision, didn’t you?
Skye (walking up with Deacon): Tyler! We’ve been looking for you, dude.
Emma: Something’s wrong with him.
Tyler (shaking his head at her): Just back off. You’re not involved in this. [He gets up.]
Emma (standing): Tyler...
Tyler: This has been a big mistake. It’d be better if you didn’t come here anymore. [Grinning triumphantly at her, Skye puts his arms around Deacon and Tyler and walks down the beach. Emma stares after them, sadly.]
[Back at Sanctuary, Adam walks down the hallway with Jesse and Brennan.]
Adam: What the hell is she thinking?
Brennan: Well, not clearly would be at the top of my list.
Jesse: She says she’s working undercover to make sure these are the right guys.
Brennan: She saw the equipment. She knows they’re the guys.
Adam: Well, these guys are not gonna stop. It’s only a matter of time before they strike again, and when they do, she’s gonna be right in the middle of it.
Brennan: We tried to pull her out; she’s not going.
Adam: Try again! [He walks off. Sighing, Brennan and Jesse look at each other, throwing their hands up.]
[On the beach, Emma walks into a small bungalow. Tyler’s crouched on the floor, packing up some blankets.]
Tyler (standing up): What are you doing here?
Emma: You really thought I was gonna stay away?
Tyler: I meant what I said before.
Emma: And since when do words mean anything between people like us? Now I feel what’s behind them. Tyler, what were you trying to protect me from?
Tyler: From me, from Skye, from all of this.
Emma (walking up to him): But it’s too late. You know, I’m a part of it. I’m a part of you.
Tyler: It wasn’t supposed to be like this. We started out with a few small time actions. But then Skye turned it into some kind of personal crusade.
Emma: You’re his magic ticket to getting into any facility that he wanted to hit. You know, he thought that he could make a name for himself.
Tyler: But he’s not wrong! The world needs this wake up call to the ecological plight.
Emma: You’re right, it does, but not like this! Not by blowing things up and maybe getting yourself killed over it. I know someone that can help you. Someone who you can trust.
Tyler: I’d like that. But first, I need to end things with Skye.
Emma: You don’t owe him anything.
Tyler: Emma, don’t argue with me! Please. [They sit down on the couch.] Skye’s got something big planned. He says he can clean out all the oil out of the oceans in one fell swoop. If I back out, he can’t do it on his own. I’ll have to talk to him. It’ll be over soon.
Emma: Is that a vision or just a hope.
Tyler: I have to try. We’ll meet at the docks at noon. And then I’ll go meet your friend.
Emma: I’d like that. [they kiss.]
[At noon, Emma waits alone on the docks. Brennan strolls up to her.]
Brennan: Hey there, stranger. [She glances around, but seeing him, she turns her back on him.] Good to see you too.
Emma: What do you want?
Brennan: Guess I wasn’t the guy you were expecting, huh? Man, this guy Tyler’s really got you all wrapped up, doesn’t he?
Emma: Skye got him looped into his cause; he never meant to hurt anyone!
Brennan: I see.
Emma: It’s true.
Brennan: Hm. You know, I know you’re in love with the guy, and that has a funny way of turning people into believers.
Emma: Brennan, we’re empaths. There is no lying between us! His thoughts are my thoughts, I know him!
Brennan: Then where is he now?
Emma: He’s–he’s ending things with Skye, and then he’s meeting me here.
Brennan (looking around): Oh yeah, well, what time did he say he was gonna be here?
Emma (checking her watch): He’s just running late.
Brennan: Oh, yeah, well, or you just don’t know him as well as you think you do.
Emma (shaking her head): You don’t know what you’re talking about. [She stomps off.]
Brennan (calling after her): Emma. Emma! [He sighs.]
[Inside the bungalow, Tyler’s packing his things. Skye and Deacon come in.]
Skye (standing in the doorway): Well, looks like somebody’s taking a trip.
Tyler: Skye, I was just coming to talk to you, man. I’m out.
Tyler: I’m no use to you anymore, man. It’s getting so I can hardly hold a vision, it hurts so much.
Skye (walking up to him): We’ve got one more job to do before you run off with the chicita. We need you, Tyler.
Tyler: I told you, man. I can’t.
Skye: I think you can. You wanna know why? ‘Cause I can see the future myself. Watch. [He bows his head, touching his temples.] I can see Tyler helping us out. Otherwise? [He pulls out a gun.] Emma’s gonna die. Don’t make me mad. This is no prediction dude. It’s a foregone conclusion.
[Emma walks into the bungalow to find it empty. Kicking some pillows around on the floor, she stands there, defeated. A little while later, she trudges back into Sanctuary. Adam and Jesse are at the computer.]
Adam (seeing her reflection in the computer): Welcome back.
Emma: I never really left.
Adam: So what’s been going on?
Emma (putting her bag down on a ledge): You guys were right. He and his friends were the ones hitting those factories. Tyler’s a telempath with the ability to see future possibilities.
Jesse: Well, that explains his success.
Emma: Adam, I’m really worried about him. He was gonna go end things with Skye, and then he never came back.
Adam (taking her arm): You think he changed his mind?
Emma: No. They’ve taken him, I know it.
Adam: Do you have any idea where they were planning to strike next?
Emma: Skye talked about The Glory Gig. The ultimate display that would open the world’s eyes to environmental concerns. He said that he was gonna clean all the oil from the oceans in one fell swoop.
Jesse: Well. Let’s see who’s in the oil cleanup business, shall we?
[Tyler and Deacon ride in the back of a van as Skye drives down a city street at night.]
Tyler: Come on, man. This is crazy.
Skye: Not when every American sees what happens when these bugs chowing down at the gas pumps. Come on, we’re starting a revolution.
Deacon: Get with the program, Ty.
Tyler: Since when did the program include semi-automatic weapons and massive explosives?
Skye: They are tools of education.
Tyler: Do you know what this is gonna do to the country? People are going to die!
Deacon: Sacrifice is the only way to make the world open their eyes, okay? [Skye grins.]
[Back at Sanctuary, Adam’s in front of the computer, showing Jesse and Brennan the OMDI website.]
Adam: So the OMDI Corporation is an experimental oil treatment plan. They’re trying to create a bacterial enzyme that actually thrives on petroleum products.
Brennan: Sounds like they’re actually working on an environmentally friendly concept.
Adam: Well, except that they’re not ready for prime time. They haven’t figured out a way to control the bacteria.
Brennan: Control it how?
Adam (pulling up a picture of the bacteria): Well, right now if it were released into the atmosphere, it wouldn’t stop eating until there was no more oil left in the world.
Brennan: Well, I guess we know where Emma’s boyfriend is headed.
Jesse: Yeah, I guess we know where we’re headed too.
Adam (nodding): Exactly.
[Mutant X is flying towards the OMDI Corporation headquarters in the Double Helix when Jesse contacts Adam over video link.]
Jesse: Adam, it seems this bacteria is being held in a bio containment vault.
Adam: Well, because in its purest form, this bacteria could eat through the essential oils of a person’s body. It could dissolve them in seconds.
Shalimar: Does Skye have any idea how dangerous this stuff is?
Emma: At this point, Skye is more interested in the publicity than anything else.
Adam: Yeah, well, if he gets his wish, he won’t live long enough to enjoy the fruits of his labors.
[Skye, Tyler, and Deacon enter the OMDI Corporation headquarters.]
Skye: So, it’s all up to you, Tyler. Which way do we go, man?
Tyler (pointing off in a random direction): That way.
Skye: Don’t lie to me, Ty.
Tyler: Do it without me, Skye! The containment vault is that way, where the enzyme’s stored.
Skye: All right. Go.
Tyler: That’s what I thought. [He leads them down the hallway.]
[Just behind them, the Mutant X team enters the building.]
Jesse (to Brennan, pointing down one corridor): We’ll got this way. [Brennan follows him.]
Emma (to Shalimar, walking down the hall): Tyler’s here, I can sense him.
Shalimar: Can you tell where he is?
Emma (snapping at her): It doesn’t act as a homing device, I just feel connected with him.
Shalimar: You’re really hung up on this guy, aren’t you?
Emma (stopping): You know what? Since I’m the only one who knows he’s innocent, maybe I should just find him by myself.
Shalilmar (grabbing her arm): Hey. You know I can’t let you do that.
Emma: Look, Shal, I’m sorry. But there’s nothing else I can do.
Shalimar: What? [Emma shoots a psionic blast at her head.]
Emma: Sorry. [She runs off, leaving Shalimar standing there in a daze.]
Shalimar (peering up and down the hallway in confusion): Emma?
[Across the building, Skye, Deacon and Tyler enter the containment facility and walk up to a table filled with glowing green containers.]
Deacon: Man, this stuff looks nasty.
Skye (whistling): Gonna save the world, my friend. Bring everybody back to the garden of Eden, and they’re gonna have us to thank. [As Deacon places the explosive charges on the table, Skye notices Tyler staring out the door and goes over to him.] What?
Tyler: Nothing. Nothing.
Skye: You’re lying. [To Deacon.] Keep an eye on him. [He leaves the room.]
Tyler: Hey, Deacon. [When Deacon turns to him, Tyler punches him. Walking out the door, Tyler smiles to himself.] I guess he should’ve seen that coming. [He’s striding along the balcony, searching for Skye, when Emma runs up to him.]
Tyler (catching her hands): Emma! Emma, you’ve got to get out of here.
Emma (shaking her head): Tyler, I’m not leaving without you.
Tyler: You’ve gotta forget about me, okay? Just go!
Emma: What did you see?
Tyler: I saw you die. Just like my little brother.
Emma: Tyler, you said it yourself. You don’t see the future; you only see future possibilities.
Tyler: But this possibility always ends the same. And I don’t want that. So just go.
Skye (walking up behind Tyler): You really are amazing, you know that? Your prediction is about to come true. [He points his gun at Emma. Hearing a noise behind her, Emma spins around to see Deacon walking up from the other direction holding up his gun.]
[Brennan and Jesse run into the containment facility.]
Brennan (looking at the explosive charges on the table): Man, these guys work fast. All right, tell me you can work faster. [He reaches for one of the charges.]
Jesse (pushing him away from the table): Hey! It’s not that simple. This bomb is booby-trapped, look. Anything I do could set it off.
Brennan (into his comlink): Adam, any ideas?
Adam: The device is probably controlled remotely. Skye’s still in the plant. I doubt he’d detonate it until he was at least 10 miles away.
Brennan: All right, let’s find the detonator. [They run out.]
[Up on the balcony, Skye and Deacon are holding Emma and Tyler at gunpoint.]
Tyler: I helped you out like I said I would, Skye. Just let her go.
Skye: Sorry, champ. You must have known this was a one-way ticket the moment you signed on.
Tyler: For me, maybe. But not for Emma.
Emma: Skye, if you release the gas into the atmosphere, there’s no telling how many people may die.
Skye: You don’t know what you’re talking about!
Emma: That’s why they’re keeping it under wraps. It’s unstable. It’ll eat all the oils in people’s bodies.
Skye: You’re lying.
Emma: You know I’m not. [On the ground floor, Shalimar, Brennan, and Jesse quietly sneak up the stairs to the balcony.]
Skye: We’ll find out shortly. And I guess you’ll be the first to find out. Deacon, detonator. [Deacon’s walking over to Skye with the detonator when Shalimar leaps down in front of him. She punches him and he falls over the railing to the floor below. Shalimar somersaults down after him, grabbing the detonator. Skye flees.]
Tyler (holding his head): Aaaaargh! [Bending over in pain, he has another vision of Skye shooting Emma.]
Emma (kneeling beside him): Tyler, what is it?
Tyler (looking up at her): Emma, I don’t want you to die. Would you just go, please? Please!
Emma: No! There’s got to be a possibility that you haven’t explored!
Tyler: There isn’t. It’s too late to change the future.
Emma (taking his arm): Come on. [They return to the containment room to find Skye standing at the table, holding his gun on the glowing containers.]
Skye: Either of you move and I pull the trigger. So what do you see next, Tyler? The beginning of a new generation?
Tyler: No, Skye. I see thousands of innocent people dying. Please, don’t do it. [Holding his head, he tries to bring on a vision.] There’s gotta be another way. [In his mind, he sees Emma die again.]
Emma: Tyler, what did you see?
Tyler: I love you. [He shoves her out of the room and hits the button on the wall, closing the glass doors to the containment room. Then he tackles Skye to the ground. Pushing Tyler off him, Skye shoots his gun at the charges, releasing the gas. He coughs as the green gas envelops him; the bacteria swallow him up.]
Emma (outside the room, running up to the glass): Tyler! [As the room behind him fills with green gas, Tyler comes up to the glass and places his hand over Emma’s. Emma starts to cry.] Oh, no.
Tyler (nodding at her): It’s okay.
Emma: I love you too. [The gas surrounds him, and his hand falls away. Emma steps back from the glass as Shalimar runs up to her. Following Emma’s gaze, she looks into the gas-filled room and realizes what’s happened.]
Shalimar (hugging Emma): Oh, Emma. [Shalimar strokes her hair as Brennan and Jesse run in.] I’m sorry. [Brennan grips her shoulder.]
[Back at Sanctuary, Emma’s alone in the lab, sitting in a chair in the middle of the room when Shalimar, Brennan, and Jesse come in.]
Shalimar: How are you doing? You okay?
Emma: Yeah. I just felt like hiding out for a little while.
Brennan (sitting in front of her): You know, in situations like this, I find it’s better to be with other people. You know, take your mind off things for a little while.
Shalimar (rubbing her back): Sorry there couldn’t have been another way.
Emma: Yeah, Tyler knew what he was doing. He was trying to save me. This was the only way.
Brennan: Well, for what it’s worth, you were right. I mean, he did save all of us. [Emma gets up.]
Jesse (walking up to her): Hey Emma, I am sorry. It must have been very hard for him to go through life always knowing what was going to happen.
Brennan: Yeah, fate’s a real bitch.
Emma: Fate is what brought Tyler and I together. You know, he realized that some things were meant to be. I guess us being together was a part of that. [She turns and walks out of the lab alone.]
